Had a leak for yrs in shower pan (unbeknownst to me) and now have the shower torn down to the studs. Remodelors are saying they will use GreenRock behind the tile and I am wondering if that is a good idea.

Yep. Made for it.
Either that or cement board.
Good luck!

I'm a do-it-yourselfer, but all my sources say cement board behind tile and green board for all other moist locations.
The stuff is harder to work with, but I have cement board behind all my tile.

Green board is just dry wall with a water resistant coating. This does not mean that it is waterproof. Concrete underlayment board is recommended for shower walls. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You are spending all this time and money on this project. Do it right!
