I think I had a voltage spike today. My tuner's rt. side output is greatly diminished, but not totally gone. And it was giving a popping noise when I was changing channels on the VCR (when the output is selected to VCR). Pioneer VSX-503X. I haven't looked, but I know that new stereos aren't that expensive. Is it worth fixing?

Man I can’t even find a picture for this unit. Either it’s too old or too new. Surges can cause problems in the long run. Fix one thing then another fails type of thing. So I would say if it’s older than 5 years to replace it. Dolby 5 is out as well as THX machines. Blow about $500 to $800 and get a bells and whistles marvel, $200 to $300 will satisfy most people. Please don’t buy an “All in Wonder” unit. The CD player will not last but maybe a year or two at best and your stuck with a high priced AM/FM tape player. Sony, JVC, Bose, Marantz Gold, Onkyo, Nakamichi, my favorite is Dennon. Sharp, Technics good all around stuff. Think about this though, with the really nice audio out here now from satellite, DVD etc Dolby 5 is a must. Minimum 5 channel surround and then speakers. Lot’s of choices there but stay name brand and get the extended warranty is offered.

Sorry the model is a VSX-D503S. It's Pro Logic, and has served me well...

It’s a 94 and retailed for $300. So it’s eight almost nine years old. Considered mid/low end. Average consumer type receiver and they sold lots of them, it would probably have lasted another 10 years but you got a kiss soooooo. I really do not recommend repairing this. I can almost guarantee you won’t get ten years out of it and it’s going to cost maybe $200+- $100 to fix it. It could be nothing more than a solder joint to one of the digital switching hung. I imagine an area repair shop will have a small fee to check it out and might be worth the trouble but if it’s major I would replace it. But again, blow about $500 and if nothing else make sure it has Dolby 5 or better.
