posted my question as an answer, sorry! thinking about tile over tile I realized that of course the wall is now thicker. Will I have a problem putting back the shower control and bath downspout? I have never replaced a control or downspout so do not know how much play you have when fitting them. Can I still do this?

nishy,

Sometimes, it is not possible to place tile over tile and still use the faucet assembly. As you indicated, the handle may not be able to go back on. If you have access to the valve assembly, see if you can move it forward and place a shim to hold it in place. You may be able to get some movement to bring it out.

Hope this helps!

thanks for your help. I guess before I attempt tiling I will have to remove the shower control to see if I can do what you suggest.

This is not recommended. You need to remove tile and wallboard. Use the recommended waterproof concrete underlayment and install new tile. If you need tips, go to www.doityourself.com/ceramic. Copy and paste the link and omit the and .
