howdy,

my first post :)

i have a small, wooden stool made out of #1 pine (unfinished). someone put an adhesive label on it... after i peeled the label off, it left a sticky residue. how can i remove this adhesive mess? will de-natured alcohol work? will it hurt the unfinished wood? or do i need something else?

thanks a lot!

Doug

Denatured alcohol, lacquer thinner, or acetone; whichever of these you have handy (or is cheapest to buy) should do the trick. None will harm unfinished wood.

As George said, all of those products will work. Hopefully it is in a inconspicuous place, like under the stool top, because the grain of the wood may raise a little bit, and may show slightly when stained, if that's what you're planning on doing.

If so you can always take fine sandpaper (320 or so) to smooth it out

yes, i'm planning on staining the piece and them i would like to either varnish or shelac it. which is better? i'm looking for durability.

woodworking is not my usual thing, i've done some, but not a lot.

your help is much appreciated!

As far as durability, here's a ranking in order from least to most:

shellac, standard varnish, polyurethane.

I bought some stuff, I think it is called "goop" at walmart, I think home depot has it too.....takes stickers and labels off with no problem. Just ask at Walmart for adhesive remover or at H.D.
