Hi folks! Hope y'all can help me here. Got a '91 Zenith TV that popped & shut down. There's a plate-type fuse mounted on the power supply (9-1075) that was burnt. There is one wire leading from said fuse over to the module (9-959). Is there anything I should go ahead & pick up when I go searching for this fuse? I gave the module a quick eye, but didn't see anything obvious. I work on kitchen appliances for aliving, so TV's aren't my strong point. Thanks for any help in advance!

I think you may be talking about a "gap" that is designed to arc over on a large voltage surge. What is the board ID number?

I bet you're correct! the only # on the board itself is 204-2067-12. The component # for this part is ex3401. If this is the case, should I consider replacing the module?

Tech Tip a follows:

1)Clicks twice and then dead./Check C3407 100uf@25volts in smps(9-1075). Capacitor might be vented.

2)Looks like arcing in picture./ 9-959-1 module: C4102, C4103, C4104. Beware all blue 10uf@25volt capacitors.

Thanks Freddy!

I'll go take a gander at that right now.

I looked all over for a tech tips site for this model last night, but turned up squat. Got any url's? Thanks for anything at all.

Well, I tried...

The cap checked out ok, but I thought "What the heck. I've got the board out."
Replaced the cap. Still doesn't even attempt to power up.

This may be a clue: when I plug it in; I get a little arc from the outlet like there's a load on it. Threw the amprobe on it. Drawing about 1/2 amp, and pulsing (I'm sure this is just the AC, but thought I'd throw it in just in case it rings a bell)

Thanks

Check and see if the H.O.T. is shorted and then check the reg. circuit for shorted componets. Use your ohmmeter to check.

I know you mentioned a popped sound. Is there a multi-pin i.c. mounted to a heatsink, str53041?

can't locate any str53041 at all-looked on every heatsink I could find

am checking HV Xfrmr-will update asap

would a shorted H.O.T. be a reason for this ex3401 to look like someone took a heli-arc to it?

Thanks for all the advice!

Not really, like xpertPC was saying its for surge, usually on the ac side of the circuit. There is a second one inside the crt socket. When it popped did the screen pop also?

the screen kinda flashed when I heard the pop, then went off

I couldn't find a shorted winding in the xfrmr (I don't have a schematic, so the resistance may be too high or low, & I wouldn't know, but nothing was infinite)

couldn't find any open or shorted components on either board

I guess I could do an Elvis impersonation & just shoot it,huh?:D

I really appreciate you guys helping me out

I'm not ready to give up yet. Let me check and see if I have a schematic on this set.
