My three year old Sharp 27" TV has an intermittent high pitch noise that comes from it when watching. It is a model 27L-S500.
The lightest of taps on the top of the set will temporarily stop the high pitch sound, but will soon return. Based on other posts I read this is probably related to the HOT (high output transitor) or the Fly Back transformer. I am quite adept with computer repairs and minor soldering of electrical items, but have never worked on a TV.
My questions are:
Can I attempt this repair myself and if so where to buy parts for my TV?
Is it worth attempting myself, by the time I buy the service manual, parts and invest the time?
Approximately how much do you think this would cost to get repaired at a local repair shop? (just an estimate, TV only cost $300).
All your input is appreciated. Have a great day.

The best way to correct the problem is to replace the flyback. There will back a part number on the flyback, post back with that number.

The original flyback for that model retails for $70, an after market will sell for half that or less. The part number should start with F followed by 4 numbers i.e. F1523.
If your comfortable with discharging the CRT (about 30KV) and can solder, then reflow the the highvoltage section, there are some components when loose that can cause that squeal. Some capacitors that have high ESR will also do this, but you said tapping stops the squeal so I'm thinking bad solder or cracked flyback.

Thanks for the input, but I chickened out (let's call it a healthy respect for high voltage). I called a couple of TV repair shops and found a knowledgable (seems to be anyway) guy who will give me a free estimate. Can't beat that. I'm always glad to pay someone for thier knowledge and expertise, but I will pick his brain a bit and start educating myself on TV repair.
Thanks again, this is an awesome site with great information!!
