I am refinishing my kitchen table. The stain is on and so is one coat of a poly finish. After applying the poly finish, I lightly sanded the surface to even things out a bit as directed. Then I used a soft clean cloth with mineral spirits to wipe my surface down. However, when the mineral spirits evaporated, there were long white streaks left on the table. I'm afraid to proceed with the next coat of poly because the last time I did the streaks were trapped under the poly coat and I had to start all over again.

Has anyone had the same experience? What worked to remove the streaks and achieve the smooth finish desired?

Will the white streaks wipe off? It may be sanding residue from the evaporating mineral spirits. Try to wipe a bit off with your finger. It if comes off, it is just sandling residue and you just need to clean the rest of it off.

koopins,

Next time, after light sanding, use a vacuum w/brush and then a tack rag. Skip the mineral spirits.
