Background Info:

6-7 year old TV/VCR combo, was sitting around watching it and i thought i heard something crack and fall..thought it was the tv stand...noticed nothing was wrong with the stand and went back to watching...

as i was watching tv the picture gradually got whiter/brighter...then there's just blackness with just a line going horizontal across the screen...

any ideas?..quick fix? call a tech? trash it?

feel free to write stewart_solomon@telocity.com if you need more information regarding this...i'd much rather fix it then replace it

thanks for any help you might be able to offer

Sounds like you no longer have vertical sweep. Whats the model number and date of manufacture on this television?

Tech Tip as follows:

1)Bright picture, enter menu vertical collapses./Exiting menu returns set to normal: Capacitor C9012 1uf@250volts near flyback. This funai chassis has vertical collapse if brightness or screen control goes to high.

Wow...i did find the cover to a capacitor laying around...and it was to C9012...i'm "VERY" new to this...wanted to know if this is something i could fix or should i trash it?..i'm thinking all i need is a new capacitor for C9012...but i don't want to assume incorrectly

If you have a soldering iron and some 60/40 solder you should not have a problem repairing it. Radio Shack does not carry any capacitors that high of a voltage so you will need to find a parts distributor (such as rca/ge, panasonic, etc.) that will sell just one. Check the yellow pages.
