I have a oil furnace with a becker burner. It just stopped working. I took the thermostat off and jumped the wires and nothing happened. I cleaned the glass eye off ,but no dirt was there. I pressed the reset button and i hear a buzz sound. I turn the manual switch and a fan in the furnace comes on but no heat.
Any ideas

Does the buzzing sound come from the control box or the pump motor and does it only buzz while you hold the button or continues for a few seconds when you release it?

Hi Greg
The noise comes from the reset box on the side of the burner. The noise stays on for about ten seconds after i release the button.

This buzz would you say it had a sound like a electric spark?Or more a hum in the motor? Is there a reset button on the burner motor? With the power off can you take and spin the burner fan by hand? When was the last time you had a hvac look at this burner?;) ED

Hi Ed
The buzz doesn't sound like a spark. The buzz comes right from the reset box and not the motor. I can spin the fan, thats free. I had it cleaned about five years ago. I get nothing but that buzz when I push the reset button. Would a clogged nozzel stop everything?

Do you know if the motor is running at this time and pumping oil in at the nozzle? Oh man 5years Id say you need a new nozzle also is that the last time the oil line filter was replaced. I think both should be done right now;) ED

I'm really sorry but it's been so long since I worked on one of these that I can't tell you exactly what to do.
You will have to determine the location of the buzz. It is likely from the pump motor that is unable to start or a relay in the control box.
Were just guessing here. I would suggest that you call an oil burner tech if you are unable to troubleshoot the motor and relay on your own.
You sometimes can only troubleshoot these things with proper test equipment and knowledge.
Maybe someone will come along that can offer more than this.

Im with Greg here do you know how to ring the burner out????if not call a hvac guy. Does the motor on the burner try at all.that button you hit is the safety relay and it should kick out if no flame and dont keep hitting it till you find out what dont work. Are the relays pulled in when you hit the reset??? or the points gone on the relays. In that short run time do you get oil and no spark or spark and no oil.You see WE need a lot more info here to help:rolleyes: ED

Hi Guys
Thanks for all the ideas. You lead me in the right direction. The motor did have a reset button but that was not it. The noise was coming right from the reset box and the motor was warm. I took the reset box off and checked it for a visual problems. Where the screws go in the board, the one that holds the yellow wire for the motor. the board was cracked. I replaced it and now I have heat. I don't know how this happens but thank you very much. Just in time I'm getting snow tomorrow.
Thanks for all your help!!!!!!
