When you are going to do a leak-down test, with the spark plug removed and with a pencil stuck into the spark plug hole...is there any 'sure fire' method to tell, at TDC, wheather you are at the begining of the power stroke or at the end of the exhast stroke? Or is the trial and error method still the best way (without re-installing the spark plug)?

Hello JA Boggan!

Take the pencil out, put your finger over the plug hole. Turn the engine by hand clockwise from top, until you feel pressure trying to blow past your finger. When you feel this compression, you are on the beginning of the power stroke. Then insert the pencil to find out when the piston hits TDC.
