I just bought a house built in the 50's. The Den and Laundry room have the oringial pine "Ponderosa" paneling. Over the years this paneling has darkened. I would like to lighten it back to its original shade. How could I do this?

It's a tedious messy project, but it can be done.

Most of the T&G (Tongue & Groove) paneling of that era was finished in orange shellac. That's what gave it its original color and also help to darken it over the years.

A 50:50 mix of denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner will remove that finish. Work small areas starting at the ceiling and scrub with 00 steel wool. It will take some time, but I think the results will be well worth it.
