Would like to know how to build a "chase" (bump-out or extension) for a direct-vent gas fireplace on an outside wall. It wouldn't be a problem if the
existing floor joists were running in the same direction as the extension (in this case I would only have to attach two or three lengths of 2X8 to the existing floor joists and extend them out a 1 or 1.5 ft outwards and then build the bump-out on them. My problem is that my floor joists are running in the other direction i.e. perpendicular to the bump-out. Could I use heavy-duty metal brackets to support the extension and if so, should they be attached to the foundation or on to the band joist of the house.?
Thanks.
