I am trying to refinish an old hardwood floor. It has been covered in the past with a layer of tar paper. Is there any type of stripper or solution that will loosen or remove that tar without damaging the hardwood?

You might try mineral spirits and a plastic putty knife. The mineral spirits may loosen the tar paper, but won't hurt the floor.

A heat gun and scraper may be helpful. Scrape gently in direction of wood grain, taking care not to harm the floor.
