We are interested in refinishing our hardwood flooring in our den but upon removing the carpeting found the hardwood covered with a hard black substance. We scraped off a bit with a butter knife and it seemed to be a chalky or powdery substance. Can anyone tell me what the black stuff is, and, if so, what is the best way to remove it? Thanks for your help!

If the substance scraped easily with a butter knife, continue to scrape with wide scraper. Scrape gently in the direction of the wood grain taking care not to damage the wood. Vacuum up chalky residue with shop vacuum. The substance could be old adhesive residue or even the remains of old carpet padding that stuck to the hardwood.
