I'm starting to build a sculpting stand. Need advice on wood selection and finishing. The stand will have to withstand water and abrasive materials. I'm thinking Oak and Spar varnish????
Any thoughts on this:)

Almost any hardwood will work - the choice is just a matter of availability in your area.

Stay away from Spar varnish. It's not as durable as polyurethane and no more water resistant.

For a truly tough finish, use Rock Hard Varnish. Originally, it was designed for bar tops, and is just about the most indestructible finish that can be applied by the average DIY'er I know of.

It's available from:

Hi,
You don't give a diameter size. I would try going to a cabinet shop and see if I could pick up a sink or basin cut out made of solid surface material. ( Corian ) Might cost you a few bucks, but it will withstand water, and abrasions, and it, (as far as I know)
won't warp. Would last a long time.
Good luck,
Trent
