I would like to find free plans, but would pay for a book, etc.
Anyone know of a good resource?

Check with large building supply houses that sell name-brand pressure-treated wood and other deck materials.
The manufacturers often have free plans.

Mike is right, AND, these guys will usually have a CAD program that will design the deck for you, all the way from the piers to the top of the railing

I selected some magazines from the magazine store at my grocery store which had "deck plans". But in the end, I used books from Home Depot for ideas and diyonline.com to design my deck.

The diyonline.com had great tools for planning w/ material lists and details for permitting.
