I am trying to replace a door knob and lock on an exterior door. How do I remove the door knob unit when there are no exposed screws?

If we know the manufacturer of the lock, it is very helpful with this type of question. The name is usually found on the edge of the door on the latch or on an original key.
Schlage is a very common lock.
With these there is a small spring tab you have to depress, sometimes while turning the knob an 1/8 turn. You should gently pull the inside knob while depressing the tab which will enable you to pull the knob off.
There will be a trim plate on the inside that will be held on by a small spring seen on the edge. By depressing the spring and prying on the edge with a small screw driver, you should be able to remove the trim plate and see the screws that hold the lock together.
