I was told that I could caulk take off ductwork where it is difficult to wrap duct tape. I found an HVAC expensive caulk in the hardware store. Is there a reason to use a special caulk or can I use a latex/silicone blend or straight silicone caulk?

High temperature caulk is used there because the take off is directly above your heat exchanger and near your flue. Maxium temperature with silicone caulking is 180 degrees F. That area may exceed that temperature, depending on the type of furnace you have.
