The 35-plus-year-old 125,000 BTU Delco is on its last legs and we're ready to go for a more efficient furnace. The Trane man recommends a 100,000 BTU 2-stage 80% for $3,000 or a 100,000 BTU 90% variable speed for $4,500. The Carrier fellow says the 80% 58STA110-1-16 will be $2,650 or the 58CVA110-16 will be $3,410. We're here for the duration. Any thoughts? Thanks.

i am not an expert but i just got a new heil 80% last week. the 80% two stage runs on the lowest stage most of the time so the efficiency level is really close to 90% (so i was told). also it has a DC fan to run all the time to regulate air temp in every room at no extra cost.

i was told by two on the estimators that most furnaces are the same between companies. some of the parts in all furnaces are all made by one company (but the heat exchangers are different).

my 80% heil was about $3,000 that included a new lining for hte chiminy, about 30 feet of new duct work in basement and included $250 for an A/C coil (i think 3 ton) so we can add A/C next summer.

I don't know if it's worth paying $1500 extra for a 2 stage furnace. I prefer Trane over Carrier, but that's just a personal opinion. Plus, I like their commercials more :) I think Carrier tends to be a bit quieter. This is based on what I've seen and heard, I'm not a furnace person, just an electrician :)
