I removed carpet from our living room floor,,,there is a hugh black spot on the light oak floor. I am not sure what it is caused from,,but I think water from years of using the Christmas tree stand,in that area. I can't tear up the whole floor to fix it. some of the finish has been damaged to the point that it came off. What can I do to either totally repair it,,,,or lighten it up, to the point that I can restain it? Thank you.

Board replacement is usually the only option.

It can be tricky but not impossible. After being a carpenter and a cabinet maker for a short term in my life. I found it rather easy the first time I ever attempted it. The right tools for the job is a plus.

As 12 and Carpets said, you're probably going to have to patch this spot depending upon the depth of the water damage discoloration in the wood.
