I am in the market for a space heater to use indoors. I went to a couple of stores today to check them out. I had no idea there would be so many choices. If you have any experience with these, can you tell me which ones are the most effective?
Thanks in advance.

Price and safety. Pets and children call for greater concern for safety. I'd always go for safety first.
The safest ones have the elecric element in a fluid heater. The heater surface temperatures are lowest and the heaters must be bigger to get the same results. Read all fo the WARNINGS and look for the UL label.

Hello: Norman
There are two types of gas space heaters. Vented and non vented. There are also electric space heaters. The assumption here is your referring to a gas heater.
Both vented and non vented space heaters may be available for sale and useage in your area. Check with local building and safety codes. Being simply available for retail sales does not always constitute legality in all areas.
If you elect to buy and use any non vented space heater, use CAUTION while heating. Unvented heaters produce fumes, some amount of carbon monoxide and consume room oxygen.
One of the byproducts of burning anything, especially a gas fuel is moisture. The moisture will cause condensation on the windows and walls, etc. Leave a window open or provide ventilation while the heater is in use and there afterwards.
Several other resident heating and cooling professionals on this type of heating system, replying within this forum, could have additional helpful information, suggestions, advice.
Check back on your question several times for additional replies.

OK, clarification. This will be used indoors in a finished area with carpeting and such. I don't have any dogs or kids to worry about. I want an electric heater but am not sure which ones are the most effective. Notice I said effective and not efficient? hahhaa
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

go with the oil filled unit. the bigger the heater, the bigger the amp draw. be sure not to overload the circuit, many of these units pull very high amps.
