my pilot light on my furnace went out. I tried to relight it. The pilot will come on. I hold it for 45 sec to 1 1/2 min. When i slowly release the pilot button to turn to on position the pilot goes out. The thermostat is off. Can anyone help me?????

The pilot flame should be blue (with no yellow...for natural gas) and wrap around the tip of the thermocouple that senses the flame. This tip should be hot enough to glow red inside of the flame. If the flame isn't right, the pilot needs cleaning or an adjustment. If the thermocouple is hot enough but not doing its job, replacing it should fix the problem.

you may have 2 small wires that connect to the gas valve where the tcouple hooks up. if so, jump these out and try again. if pilot stays lit, this safety is open. some call this a fusible link. if you replace the themocouple, and problem continues, gfas valve may be bad. many years ago we rebuilt these valves, replacing the "safety magnet" unfortunately this led to many gas leaks at the valve, and therefore they are no longer rebuilt this way.
