Problem: 3 floors, one HUGE oil boiler, with 2-pipe closed system distributed throughout the home. Thermostat is on 2nd floor.
"Like I knew when buying it", the 1st floor is hot (even with most valves closed), the 2nd floor is great, and the 3rd floor is cool.
What can I do to expedite steam/hot water to the 3rd floor? Will closing valves on he 1st floor inhibit in anyway getting heat to the top floors? I ask this becuae the cellar where the boiler is is very warm, comfortable actually.
Will wrapping the souce pipes in the cellar (and those in accessible walls) help, if any at all? The T-stat is an old analog one, but boiler and all valves (some lines too) are brand spanking new.
I am in the process of mapping out in 3-D the distribution of the pipes as they leave and return to the boiler. Thankfully, the guy who renovated the home gave me this detail as an Autocad file, but it didn't include the heat plumbing.
If a run to the 1st floor only isn't needed, can I simply add a shutoff to that run? Do they make an electronic valve that I could wire to a demand switch or thermostat that's wired to the 1st floor?
Any an all help appreciated. If you're an expert and are near the No Shore of Mass ... you've got a job :D !! Thank you - cheers!

http://www.heatinghelp.com/heating_qa.cfm This a site that will help you understand your system. I'm not sure if you have a steam 2-pipe, hot water gravity or a forced hot water system. Once you know which one you have, that site should be able to explain how to correct it. The problem you have shouldn't be that difficult to correct.
