Gardening and Horticulture - Removing Horseshoe spikes in the lawn

I just bought a house with horse shoe spikes (along with wooden boards as back support) in the back yard. Do I need any extra tools to remove them from the ground ?

A 3 or 6 pound sledge, with side to side strikes, will eventually loosen them enough to pull them up. Some type of pry bar will get the wood up.

I would have to say that it depends on.
Are the pipes set in Cement?

Are they driven in? Mashed tops are a dead giveaway.

Can you rock them back and forth by hand?

Have you dug or poked a thin steel rod around to see if cement is present?

Are you prepared to dig up a cement hole fill, that at this point we don't know how deep they are in. If in cement will just cutting them off below the surface meet your needs? Or do you want to remove everything?

I use a 4 foot 1/4 inch unthreaded rod with a sharp point to determine things like where the septic tank is or pipes called soil pipes used 30 years ago for septic system etc.

Let us know what you find out & it may be as simple as using a bumper jack and a piece of chain to jack them up and out.
