Hi all,
I appreciate all the help on this i can get.
I recently took this bike out of storage, and am having a few problems. First of the bike is like it says in the title, an '86 honda magna vf700c. After taking it out, i changed the oil, coolant, and spark plugs.
The problems i am having are:
1. The bike will not idle and normal tach speed. I have a clymer repair guide, which states the bike should idle at 1200 rpm +- 100 rpm. Unless i have it at around 1700 rpm (i am using the choke to keep the idle this high) it sputters and dies.
2. When starting cold (4hrs or more sitting) i hear a tick, or popping sound, and it is hard to start. I have to try starting it 3 or 4 times, for 4 to 7 secs each, before it sounds normal and finally catches.
3. Don't know if it is related to number 1, but from a stop, the engine is hesitant, and almost dies, until i actuall get going, and the rpms reach 2500-3000.
I know part of these problems could be from the engine sitting so long without really being ran.
Don't know if this matters, but the weather has been somewhat cold (cool 60 - 70 degrees farenheit) The popping type noise sounds almost like it is coming from the spark plugs. I gapped them correctly (between .8 and .9), so i don't know if this is the problem.
The weird thing is, i started the bike a few months ago, with none of the above problems. It seems to only be happening now after i gave it a tune up. I live in las vegas and used 10w 40 oil in it, as the owners manual shows various viscosity oils for different temps, and this seemed the best fit for the climate here.
Also, as i said, i have the clymer repair guide, and have looked through, albeit not to thouroughly, and am wondering the degree of difficulty in doing several things, ie clean, rebuild carberateur, replace seals in front shocks, and replace tranny fluid.
Also this is my only vehicle as of now, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also sorry for spelling and hope this is easy to read.
thanks in advance
Nate

I have a 1984 V30 Magna (500 cc). I had very similar problems. The Carburetors are very likely to gum up due to fuel residue and/or varnish in the gas.
Two options - first, get a bottle of Yamaha Carburetor Cleaner. This is powerful stuff so follow the directions. I usually leave it in the carbureators for 48 hours before draining. Do not mix it with gas but do as the bottle says.
Your bike will probably purr like a kitten.
Option two is to have the carbs rebuilt but this is expensive and I would try the cleaner first.
Don't waste your money on cleaners you add to the gas tank. They are not strong enough to do any good.
Good luck. As the ad used to say " You meet the nicest people on a Honda".
