Hey guys! :)

I'm thinking about getting a mushroom log for either this winter or next year. As is usual for us, I've been poking around through a Google search, and have come up with a few companies. Anyone ever grow mushrooms? Miguel? How about you? If so, what vendor would you recommend?

Newt,
I'm a member of GardenWeb, and I dont know how I missed that post, but thanks for bringing it to my attention. Any more info from anyone? I think a mushroom patch would be cool :)

Funny you ask Eric, as we are going to build a 10 by 10 foot by 5 foot high cabin style white Oak ****take venture this winter. Screen house with roof and over head mister setups.

At $10.00 per Lb, it is a good extra source of income. In this type of growing you cut dormant White Oak trees. Wash the bark without harming the bark, & let them cure with overhead misters (Our choice) some soak the logs in clear clean Mountain streams.

Then you drill holes into the logs & put in plugs covered with hot wax or some have stryofoam plugs to fill in the holes with the inoculent.

I will get some links for you on that culture.

The only time we tried the log, was a kit we bought from Organic & Gardening & Farming magazine, back in 74. The kind you put in the refrigerator & we got about 6 ****takes & I am sure we did something wrong. I think we let the log dry out.

I have seen many kits online today with all kinds of mushrooms. Go slow & write some growers, you should have good luck by following the instructions to the letter.

The Farmers wife down the road at the Beefalo farm, was given 3 logs 2 years ago & she just set them down in a T-Pee on the ground over in the shade. Her & Bert get a mess once in a while, three or 4 times a year, so it can't be that hard.

As I said I will gather up some of the links, check them against Newts, Mother of all links pool :p LOL just funnin ya newt :) Then if I have anything new I'll let you know.

Hi Eric and Marturo,

Mother of all links pool checking in here! :D I just realized in reading this that I forgot a very useful link from UC Davis on Pest Management and Identification. Great info for controlling voles, moles, rabbits, mice, ticks and much more.

Eric,
Glad to know that you go to Garden Web. Lots of useful info there as well. They have several forums that should be helpful. I did a search there on 'mushroom kits' to get those links.

Marturo,
At $10.00 a pound, maybe I should consider getting a kit of my own? ;)

Actually, my veggie garden is only 8' by 10'. I have a very small piece of property and due to the house and landscaping renovations, I didn't plant this year at all. :( I will be doing a lasagna prep this fall for next years planting.

Happy 'shrooming'!
