I would like to take a window out and install French Doors from my bedroom to the deck. I have a concrete block home and this wall happens to be a load berring wall. What would be the best way to approach this job?

Hi detel,

Yes, usually (but not always), concrete blocks are part of the structure, so you can't just "cut" the wall. This will depend specifically of your wall. Of course, you can change the window without change the size.

Other tip, the windows and door cases, when they are used in brick walls or CB, they usually have some little metallic pieces to interlock the openings with the blocks. So, to take out the window, you'll need to find these pieces and cut them.

Hope this helps

Hi ,,, Anytime you change opening sizes in masonry block walls the header is what needs to be concerned about. You will be going to a bigger opening so you have to cut 8 in higher then the door and install new concrete lintel. Might want to contact a local mason and ask some questions ,,and go from there. Good luck with the project. Freeman

Hi,

With CB is different, it is not only the header.
