Make: Zenith
Model: SB2513G1
Year: 1985
Tuner Part#: 175-2263
I am having a problem with the above set. I get nothing but static until it warms up for about 30 minutes. Once warmed up, it tunes for about 2 minutes at a time, switching back and forth between static and the tuned image. It's gradually getting worse.
I don't have any experience in television repair but I have an EE degree and plenty of experience with printed circuit boards.
The set is in a remote cabin and the temperature inside the house often gets into the 40s during the winter. So I suspect some sort of solder failure do to the temperature swings.
Is this definitely a tuner issue? If so, what and where should I be checking? Are there any highly suspect solder joints? If the tuner does need to be replaced, are there any recommended places to purchase a new/rebuilt one? Thanks for all responses.

Look for green solder joints first, there is a company called PTI that repairs and aligns tuners. However I could not find a net link to them. What I did find was http://qualitytuner.hypermart.net/ I don't know this guy but maybe you could call him and get an idea of his knowlege. You might also call a local repair shop and see if the will tell you how to get hold of PTI. They may not even be in business any longer...

Hmm.. didn't see any green solder joints. There's about three white wires on the topside of the board that look poorly patched in.

That used to be a high failure item on those sets.
I never was able to "fix" one by resoldering ...
Replacement was the only cure
