I am going to buy new carpet for the first time in 20 years, what do i need to know. one carpet man said face oz no longer matters. I will be carpeting a family room 30x12, bedroom small hall and 13 stairs. this is the lower lever of a raised ranch, i want all of the carpet the same. This is approx. 75 sq yards. I was thinking about $1200. but after looking at a couple of stores I think i have to go up some. right noe there are only 2 of us, but we may sell soon and a famly may move in. Any suggestions will be helpful.

Who said face weight didn't matter? He was a salesman too. Wow!
Face weight does matter, especially in a berber carpet!! The greater the face weight the more luxurious it will feel. More face weight usually gives the carpet more cushion even without padding under it.
The twist of the yarn, in a cut pile carpet should also be considered. The tighter the twist the more it resists what is called "tip blossoming". Which then leads to that matted down look.
Now lets look at something the consumer rarely gets educated on. The carpet backings!!!
There are over 30 different types of carpet backings out there. They are not all installed the same. Although some of the installation is the same, that little different backing can mean a failure if it isn't installed to manufacturers specs. There are several popular and commonly used residential backings. There are cheap backings(action-bac 5 pick) and then it goes up from there, jute back, 12 pick action-bac and so on up to to Shaw Industries "Softbac".
The better the backing, the longer the carpet will keep its dimensional stability, to resist delamination and wrinkles. Carpets with better backings will have a longer warranty also.
Cushion selection is also forgotten. The proper cushion will make the carpets last longer. The thinner and denser the cushion, the longer life you will get from the carpet backing, and traffic patterns.
I know it is a hard decision. It is an investment in your home. You want it to be perfect. Take your time and find the carpet you like and an honest flooring contractor you interview, with excellent references. www.CFIinstallers.com
They may be higher priced, but a good craftsman is never cheap. Your carpet will only be as good as the installation.
