Hi All,
I recently purchased a 16:9 RPTV. I can't figure out why some DVDs (widescreen versions) still display black bars on the top/bottom while others fill the entire screen as expected. I checked movie, TV and DVD options. Any explanation? Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. Is there anything I can look for such as a symbol on the DVD that will dictate the display? I used to think that widescreen meant just that, and would fill a 16:9 display. Thanks again, and BTW, I purchased a Toshiba 57HX81 and watching DVDs with progressive scan is absolutely spectacular. I can't stop saying wow and I am totally satisfied with this TV.

there should be some type of "wide mode' or "aspect" button on the remote.
I'm not farmiliar with he new Toshibas, but other brands have this button.
Some sets won't allow the screen fill mode while in progressive scan, you may have to switch the DVD player back to 480i to get the wide mode to work.

The button on the remote you are looking for is
pic size. It is located to the right of the remote
right next to the left arrow key in the center of
the remote. Also look for dvds that are 2.35:1 to
fill up the whole screen. Any other size will have
the bars. The different pic modes will also distort the picture somwhat. Hope this helps
