Hello all!!! First time homeowner here. I don't have a lot of leftover cash, so I am forced to become the jack of all trades. I pick up on fixing things real quick, so it works out perfect for me.
The a/c unit I have is central air, an older Sears custom box. Not the typical tall big units, but rather a smaller longer shorter rectangular box. Got to be 20 years old?
I checked the circuit breakers, everything is on. I turn the a/c on at the thermostat and walk outside to the central air box. There is another box on the wall, I open it, it is another breaker with one switch, it is in the on position, I reset it to be sure.
With the thermostat in the house set on A/C, when I walk out and look at the central air unit All I hear is a straight humming sound coming from it, and the Fan is not spinning. What do I do next??? Thanks a million for all input.

is this something I can fix myself or check myself? I have no experience with this. What do I do, or look for?

Depends on how comfortable you are working around electricity. Take the cover off the control box on the a/c unit and look for the contactor. It's a large relay with several wires connected to it. Does it look like it's pulled in all the way? Is it full of ants, critters? Do the contact points look burnt? See any burnt off wires or terminals? If you have a voltage tester, check the power coming to the a/c unit from the outdoor breaker. It should be 240 volts. Check these items out and let us know what you find.
