We are remodeling our 111 yr. old farmhouse, and there's a huge mantel and bricked-up fireplace in the kitchen. We don't know how long it's been closed, but a decendant from the original family seems to think the massive wrought iron utensils are enclosed! I would LOVE to open this fireplace up, but I am afraid of disturbing the integrity of the original chimney which was built with rocks from the property. How can be go about this, and should we try to in first place?
