My A.C. is giving off a musty smell into the room. It is a through the wall unit. I have removed it and cleaned everything in it I could. It looks clean but smells like must? The grill seems like it held the odor. Has anyone else expierenced this? Where you able to fix it?

Remove the unit and pressure wash indoor and outdoor coils at a car wash (wand type). Do it on a sunny warm day in the AM. Protect the electrical and motors from water with plastic.

The blower wheel may be dirty. It should be cleaned as well. It must be disassembled to clean which is not an easy thing to do.

Then just to be safe let them bake in the sun for 3 to 4 hours after washing to be certain that any moisture that may be there unseen or seen will be fully DRY. Reinstall it and be fussy about the filters from now on.

Some units and jobsites have more problems than others. The problem is not fully understood, but it has a name: DIRTY SOCKS SYNDROME.
