I am planning on removing the "octopus" furnace in the basement. I know that the duct work is wrapped in asbestos. All of the procedures that I have looked into are for scraping floors or ceiling. Can I simply bag the sections of duct work without scraping the asbestos off of them? Following the normal safety procedures, of course.

with the local bldg inspector, i am sure however that the asbestos should be in a dedicated bag for hazardous waste disposal. if you do this yourself, wet the asbestos first, that will reduce.....notice i did dot say eliminate ...the asbestos fibers released into the air. personally i would not do this myself.

I seriously doubt that in any state a homeowner can do their own asbestos abatement. Think about it-you want asbestos fibers floating around your house? PLUS- how are you going to dispose of it? In garbge bags at the curb? Man, as soon as those are crushed and asbestos fibers start flying around, everybody in town will sue you. Where I work, every asbebstos removal job has required the use of HEPA filtering machines. I suggest you don't do this yourself.
