I'm trying to repair a receiver unit that will no longer put out any sound. the unit powers on, but the digital screen is very faint and there is no power to the speakers ( or the headphone jack, for that matter). All other functions seem to work, just no sound. Any ideas what it may be? I was thinking maybe something overheated, but I can't be sure.

Moet likely blown outputs. You will need a soldering iron, 60/40 solder and an Ohm meter. What type of outputs are they? Large single pack or several smaller transistors attached by screws to the large munimulA heat sink. You will need to know how to front to back test the transistors or the schematic for the audio pack to read the VCC and VDD as well as bootstrap and +5 volt lines. Is there 65 volts on the emitter or base of the transistor type outputs? Should only be on the collector. Since you have lights but they are dim I bet the outputs are shorted and the protection has kicked in but for some reason not fully. If the five volt line has dropped more than 7/10ths of a volt the unit will act up. Look for bad solder joints before you do anything…
