I need suggestions. I have a walkway - exposed aggregate and large stones. The previous owner did this and it is awful. The surface is uneven. It is hard to walk on, it is painful in bare feet and it cannot be shoveled in snow/ice weather. My spouse and I would like to remove it but do not want to hire/rent a jack hammer. Can we break this out ourselves using a sledgehammer. We broke out an old AC pad with rebar a few years back. We do not think this has rebar - only one expansion joint and the two pads are about 6 inches thick. We believe the hardest part will be disposing of the material. We need to be consious of our patio pad and driveway pad that abut this walkway. We also have newer (expensive) doors that we do not want to mar (we plan on putting up wooden barriers to protect the doors. We would like to plant grass after it is torn out and simply use our driveway as a walk or put down a few stepping stones embedded into the grass.

Any other suggestions? Anything that could help us do the job smarter? We would like to complete this in a weekend or less. Sound feasible?

You never said how long the walkway is, however, it only has one expansion joint...so assuming it isn't long. HAMMER AWAY! Just be sure to wear safety gear, there is going to be pieces of rock, cement flying everywhere. Hang a tarp or blanket in front of windows, doors or anything you don't want to get damage by flying debris.
Easier way....Post sign outside yard...10 cents a swing! Let the neighborhood kids pay you to break it up:D

I would estimate 3 feet by 5 feet (it is curved from drive to patio pad). Really ugly. As far as the neighbor kids, I don't want to get sued and we've got our own to worry about getting in the way.

Thanks for the tips.
