I'm moving into a house (renting) that I have been told by the last tennants has a old coal fireplace. They have said that they burn the small store bought logs in the very back and that only this way do they have no smoke entering the house. This sounds a little crazy to me but I would like to have use of it (not with coal). Other than chimney sweeping what do I need to know about this type of fireplace and how do I keep it clean & safe?
Thanks for any info

There's always a danger of chimney fires with any old type of fireplace.
Have it cleaned and video-camera inspected by a chimney sweep before you put any fire in it.
Good Luck!
