matt, Sound like you lost your video voltages at crt (picture tube) board and the sound has muted because of this problem. There should be three 15K ohm resistors on the crt board for the red, green, and blue color guns that change value and shuts the video voltage down which gives you the picture you have now.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP BUT I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION
WHEN I OPENED IT UP THERE IS A RED, BLUE, A HUGE FADED BLUE RESISTOR ARE THESE THE 3 YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT?
DO I NEED TO ORDER THESE OR CAN YOU JUST BUY THEM FROM A STORE LIKE RADIOSHACK. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP

On that crt board where the socket is (that connects the board to the picture tube neck), look on the solder connection side of this board where the socket is soldered to the board and there should be letters next to each socket pin. Find the letters KR,KG,and,KB those are your color gun connections. Take your volt meter, set it on the highest dc scale, connect your ground to the metal tuner, take the other lead and check for any voltage at those three pins. Write down your reads. There should be at least 150volts or better on each pin. Whats the model number and date of manufacture on this television?

Ok i test the guns and there wa no reading from those three at all it just read zero and when I tested the other pins they just kept changing values o im not sure if they are dead or not but those three didnt read anything at all. the model of the tv is a Philips Magnavox TS2779C1 and it was manufactured Jan 2001.

Thank you
Matt

Remove the board from the picture tube and see if it still reads zero at those three pins, If it does not then follow one of the pin traces from the pin to the wire lead at the bottom edge of the board and take a read there. If it does then the picture tube is bad.

Hello its me again I just tested the pins and still nothing I unplugged it and still nothing, but I did notice that on the pins on the tube itself some of them have what looks like burn marks on them, but i dont know if this means anything at all. I tested the pins KR,KG,KB on 500 dc volts which is the highest my meter will go and still nothing at all on any of the pins, but the odd thing is that when I tested the pins on ohms I get a reading from all of the pins EXCEPT KR,KG,KB, I have tried all the settings on the meter and the only one i get a reading on is the ohms and those readings keep changing until they finally get down to a single number except for the three main pins which have no reading at all. Thank You agin for taking the time to help me out with my problem.

Thank You
matt

I checked a tech tip on your problem as follows:

Bright Screen With Retrace lines In Video Then Shuts Down

Check Resistor 3340/10ohms In 220 Volt Line On Crt Board

Set your meter to ohms and start at lowest setting. If you get no read on the lowest setting advance up the next settings till you get a reading. Make note on what setting you got your read from that resistor. Low value resistors are often used as fuses within a circuit to protect specific circuit(s) by changing resistance. You will probably find its in the megaohm range which means its shot. Make sure you unplug the set before you do this check.

Hello its me again with what i hope is good news :).
I just tested resistor number 3340 on the crt board (the board was not connected to the tube) I tested it on all ohm settings on the meter and the only one that i got any reading off of was on the 2m setting ,but it would keep changing until the reading went back to nothing, but it did get something unlike the rest of the settings. I think and hope this is good thing and this is the problem:)? Thank You Again and Again for taking the time to help me out.

Thank You
Matt

If you got a read on the megaohm setting that resistor is bad, replace it. Radio Shack should have the one you need, just show them your sample.

Hello thats cool because I work at Radioshack, but I dont know what the fith line means on the resistor the color patern on the resistor is Brown, Black, Black, Gold, and Pink. Now I know that it is a 10 ohm resistor with 5% tolerance, but what does the pink line mean because pink isnt even a color on the chart and my last question is what kind of solder should i use because when i tried to solder it it doesnt solder and i even used heat seak and still wont stay. Thank you VERY much, I hope this is the problem :)

Thank You

IT WORKS!!!! I put a 10 ohm 1/2 watt 5% tolerance resistor in and it works and I hope it keeps on working. Well thank you very very very much for your time and the help you have given me.

Thank you

Boy it was very interesting reading about how you fixed your own TV. I have generally thrown them away instead of trying to fix them. I would like to learn how to fix on TV's. Can you give me some advice on where to start. I see a hobby in my future. Thanks
