I'd like to build out a faux wall for my bigscreen TV. I'm wondering if I can back the TV into the existing wall and give myself the 3 1/2 inches that I'd gain from removing studs in the wall.
The problem is that this is a load bearing wall. Is it possible to build in a crossbrace to take the load from the studs I want to cut out of the wall? Anyone got any links with more information on doing this?

you can modify a load bearing with the proper sized headers but if it's an outside wall you lose
insulation. not a good idea. if it's an inside wall you lose soundproofing to the adjoining room.
you will also more than likely have to do some rewiring.
not knowing any more than i do it seems like a lot of work and extra expense to gain 3". don't mean to throw cold water on your idea but i think i would explore some other options.
