What is the best method for removing existing ceramic tile on a concrete slab? Is there a power tool one can rent to accomplish this task?

There are electric chipping hammers which are small jack hammers. Get a wide blade with it.
You'll have chips and dust everywhere, but that's the way to do it.

Does this electric jack hammer break the slab floor inder the tile?

You would angle the hammer so that it removes the tile and not the cement slab...you may get some damage to the slab though...a few chips out of it here and there. Is that a problem?

I don't think it will be a problem. How do you remove the thin set or whatever is under the tile? I want to remove everything and the paint / stain the concrete slab. Any ideas?

A lot of it may come up with the tile..but the only way to it all off it to scrape it off, or rent a small floor grinder. Dusty? Yes...but it works.
