I removed some damaged carpeting and also the tack strips. In doing so I broke numerous tiles (which were under the carpet) and cracked the concrete slab around the perimeter of the room. What do I have to do to prepare this floor for new carpeting? Should I remove all of the remaining tile? Does the concrete need to be repaired? What would I use to patch the concrete? Do I need to put anything between the concrete and the carpet pad?

Remove any loose tiles. Shop-vac any debris. You can patch the holes around the perimeter made by the concrete nails penetration, for you peace of mind, but it really isn't needed if you are going to put new tackstrip down, unless the holes are HUGE. When nailing the new strip, stagger the nails in the strip with the holes in the concrete.

Although I have only done it once in a condo that was over a parking garage, you can put poly over the concrete, and under the pad. Beware: This can cause noise transfer when stepped on.
