I have wooden casement windows and might as well say the whole window is beginning to become soft along the sill due to lack of care by previous owners of this home, which we bought 6 months ago. Anyway, my question is can I do anything to preserve the sill of my window until next spring, at whch time I plan to replace it?

I'd slap a good coat of exterior paint on it IF I did anything at all....Unless water is leaking into the wall, if I was gonna replace it this spring, I wouldn't do anything.....why spend time and money on something that is going to the dump that soon ?
