Refinishing a solid oak dinette table top. It had a few nicks etc. We sanded them down, appied stain and it looked pretty good. Applied polyurethane, now dosn't looks so good. Some places are smooth and look great but others are bumpy with blisters. Do we sand again to take out the blisters? Is poly the thing to use on a table top? Not sure what was on it before - didn't know about testing.

If there was any finish left on it may be that the poly is not compatable with it.
Or your stain could still not be comjpletly cured.
I recomend stripping down to bare wood and starting over.
Poly is fine to use for table tops. For the DIYer it is recomended.

Polyurethane is notorious for bubbles (bisters). If teh finish has set up (gotten hard) it probably wasn't contaminated by what's underneath. Most contaminate poly stays tacky, even after drying overnight.
Stripping might be necessary, but before you do that, sand out the bubbles, add a little (about one ounce per quart) of boiled linseed oil and stir well. Use this method ONLY with oil based poly - not water based.
This lengthens the dry time of the poly, allowing the bubbles to flow out.It also helps eliminate brush marks.

Thank you both for your advice. The previous coat of poly did harden.
We sanded the table but not down to bare wood. The blisters are gone. We did not strip. Stain shows on majority of the table but there are a few little streaks that shine, not sure from what but they won't sand out. Do we have to get all of them out? I want to stain over everything again and proceed with the poly. Hubby wants to strip it with paint thinner, is this wise??
Someone told me there is something that you put on so the poly will adhere. Would I need it for the shiny spots? Majority of the table was shiny when I stained it the first time and the poly hardened over them. Thanks again for any advice you can give. I would just like to get this project done. <s>
