Im preparing to install a ceramic tile verneer over the existing brick face on a fireplace in our den, and also replace the old hearth with ceramic tile as well. I've removed all the old hearth tile down to the old mortar mud base layer. The brick face is painted, so I'm thinking of either attaching diamond lath to the brick and floating a mud layer, or using a CBE such as Hardibacker. I'm also planning to add a layer of 1/4" Hardibacker on the old hearth to ensure a level install.

Any ideas on if I'm on the right track, or any additional suggestions. Do I need a special tile and/or thinset because it's a fireplace, or is basic stuff OK? We're adding a gas insert that only needs a non-combustible base on which to sit back in the firebox area.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom...
