As this is my first time laying drywall, which is better for a first-timer, paper tape or the self adhesive nylon type? what are the pros and cons of each? I will more than likely use the paper tape on inside corners, but not sure about the joints.

I'm not a pro, but from the comments that I've seen in here, most prefer paper for corners, but the mesh for flat seams.
Can't tell you exactly why. Maybe one of the pros (if one comes along) can tell you.
Good luck!

Not a pro but I have tried mesh in corners - just once, and never again. Paper can be pre folded to a fairly square corner before application to the walls ( some tape is already creased). The drywall mud gives some "slip" so you can force the tape completely into the corner. On the other hand, its very difficult to "crease" mesh down the middle and because it sticks to the wall, you have a hard time getting it back completely into the square corner.
