I am installing a dryer drum seal using 3M Scotch Grip 847 and was told to wait 24 hrs for the glue to dry. Since it appeares that the glue is contact cement doesn't 24 hrs seem an overly eccesive waiting period?

Hello heyoldman. Welcome to my Gas Appliances forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

Your question is valid but I am not familar with all aspects of dryer mechanical repairs. My assumption regarding the adhesives drying time is because of the dryers heat, the drying time for the adhesive may have to be extended to ensure a good bonding effect.

DRYER SERVICE TIP:
It's always adviseable to clean the entire exhaust venting system every 2 years and or during any dryer maintenance and or repairs.

Not only that but contact cement (and the 3M 847 adhesive) is highly flammable and toxic to breath. Neither would be good to have around a open flame like a gas dryer's burner.
