I want to replace the vinyl floor in a bathroom with tile. The house is two years old.

Can I just pull the vinyl and put the tile on whatever base is under the vinyl, or do I have to put down wonderboard before the tile?

Thanks much.

Now that all depends. Concrete subfloor, yes tear and scrape it up, unless you want to use it as a crack suppression membrane, which is iffy!

Over a wood subfloor, install a ceramic tile underlayment! But most of all, make sure the joist and subfloor will support the extra weight!

I tore up the vinyl last night and found that there is particle board underneath. I think I have to pull this out also... placing wonderboard over this will raise the tile too high relative to the carpet at the door.

Does this sound like the correct approach?
