Hello all;

I am in the process of laying ceramic tile in my 1962 vintage kitchen. The existing floor is asphalt tile over slab on grade construction. The good folks on this list have convinced me that the best way to head off problems down the road, is to remove the old tile and get down to the concrete floor.

My question is . What is the best way to remove the old mastic? Is there anything that will remove it that is non-flammable? This is a confined area with poor ventilation. Any and all advise is welcome.

TIA
bruce

If it is Black in color, it is cutback mastic. Use this stuff to encapsulate it.

Both Sentinel (that sell products in HOME DEPOT) and DUMOND Chemicals have specific products for removal of this type mastic.
