I'm remodeling the bath. Older home with raised foundation, subfloor is 1X6. What is the best underlayment for vinyl flooring, 3/8" ext. AC Plywood, 3/8" high-density particle board, or 1/4" Hardie backerboard? There may be others but my concern is for moisture resistance which the backerboard offers. Problems I've encountered with plywood is hidden knot holes resulting in a slight collapse below the flooring. In one case I used the partical board coated with 2 coats of polyurethane, still going strong. Any suggestions?

You sound as though you have been looking at different materials but each one that you mentioned has its own recommendations for finish product applications.

Lauan or Maranti plywood: (often called "Solid-core mahogany plywood). Although they do not have all of the preferred properties for underlayment, they are being utilized with reasonable success by many retailers under resilient flooring installations. Lauan should be Type 1 (Ext) Exterior, which indicates that the panel has an exterior or fully waterproof glue bond. This may also be designated by the letter "P." Any one of these two face grades are acceptable: CC, and BB.
