Can someone tell me how to remove black soot stains from the front of my brick fireplace? I've tried a wire brush with no luck. One complication is that I have parrots in the same room and will need to use something that's not toxic. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Move the parrots. Protect your floor with plastic.
Use muratic acid and a wire brush.
Good Luck!

Use Rutland Product's Brick and Stone Cleaner available on this website (hey, I should get a comission). It's alkaline, so it's caustic, however not as bad as muriatic acid. I have used it on my old fireplace for it's first cleaning ever.

Gladdog, I think Oldguy is right. You're going to have to at least temporarily move your birds. In my (albeit limited) experience there is *nothing* that will take the soot off that won't put out *some* sort of fumes. I used a very strong solution of TSP and bleach and managed to get about 85% off. Enough to live with, anyway, but you really don't want to be in the same room with *that* either!
